Used Oil Program
UPDATE: As of September 1, 2018, Used Oil collection sites can take spent antifreeze and used oil filters.
Used Oil Collection and Reuse Program
It is against the law in the State of Nebraska to dump used oil in landfills. Used oil when improperly discarded poses risk of contamination to our soil, surface waters, and groundwaters. With an estimated 5 million gallons of used oil being generated in rural Nebraska each year, we must take responsibility for properly disposing of the used oil we generate.
The Used Oil Collection and Reuse Program was initiated to ensure all Nebraskans can dispose of used oil properly. Used oil collected through the program can be reused, recovered for energy, used in asphalt applications, or re-refined.
Oil Pollution Dangers
Each person’s behavior in disposing of used oil makes a huge impact on the environment and our communities. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that used oil is responsible for approximately 40% of the pollution in rivers and streams. Just one gallon of used oil can ruin one million gallons of fresh water – a year’s supply for 50 people.
Used oil can release toxic metals including lead, cadmium, and arsenic into the environment. This is especially dangerous when used oil is burned, disposed along fence lines, or disposed of on roads. Not only is this behavior against the law, it puts our environment and our health at risk.
Collect your used oil in clean, empty, and resealable containers. Make sure to avoid any contamination of water, antifreeze, or other materials. Once collected, take your uncontaminated used oil to your local collection facility. See our list of used oil collection sites to find the site closest to you.
